Trend Towards Cheap Generic Drugs Continues

The IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics has released a report on the most widely-used prescription drugs in the US in 2010. The Institute, an initiative of IMS Health, was established early in 2011 to strengthen global healthcare collaboration and "to work in tandem with government agencies, academic institutions, the life sciences industry and payers to drive a research agenda dedicated to addressing today's healthcare challenges".

The IMS report underlines the continuance of a major trend towards generic drugs over brand names, with 78 percent of the year's 4 billion prescriptions written for generic medications. Not surprisingly, the widely prescribed generic drugs are not the drugs generating the most money for the pharmaceutical companies. The top money makers are brand name prescription drugs of which generic versions are not yet available. The report noted that generic drug substitution for brand name drugs whose patents expired cost pharmaceutical companies $12.5 billion in 2010.
